John Maine looked great today going six strong innings. I'd love to see the Mets offer him a long term deal to buy out his arbitration years and a year or two of free agency. He's so consistent for a guy his age. And he's never hurt.

It's definitely the trend in baseball now to buy some free agent years for young players that have success. Maine deserves a long term deal as much as anyone.

Agree, Dave. Maine is a solid #2. He has been consistent, shown the ability to pitch under
pressure and has been injury free. One of Omar's better deals (can you believe we got him
for Kris Benson???). I do believe you are going to see more and more teams, especially
small markets, lock up younger players to long term deals. Not a bad idea in regards to Maine.

I agree, Dave. The NY Mets should be wise enough to follow your lead regarding the ink of a long-term deal, so I’m hoping it’s just a matter of time until an agreement is made – Maine and Mets.

Additionally, I’d like to start seeing Maine pitch another inning or two – depending on the situation, of course. If Pedro can comeback from injury and pitch during a chilly evening by the Bay, than I’m confident that Maine can go deeper into a game.

Needless to say, the Metropolitans have a – don’t-know-whatcha-gonna-get bullpen, which is another reason why the starting pitcher should stick-it-out for a few more outs. Moreover, if the starter has been nothing short of confident thru six-innings, than I’m even more prepared to watch our starters clamp-down and get a few-outs.

I like Maine, but he needs to get beyond the 6th inning.

I'll be curious to see what impact the new pitching coach has on Maine... and everyone else.
